Boat Captain

Help lost teens find purpose and direction through structured 45-day service learning expeditions at sea.

Who we're looking for

SailFuture’s Captain will be responsible for vessel operations during service learning programs, as well as all ship operations, training, safety, vessel maintenance and management throughout the year.

The captain will work with a teacher and counselor to lead six 45-day service learning programs per year. Six youth will be on the boat during each trip. The itinerary will cover the coast of Florida and the Central Caribbean.

Prior to departure, the captain will help lead training programs to teach youth and staff the fundamentals of sailing, including but not limited to, points of sail, vessel operations, intro to ship electronics, anchoring, docking, emergency procedures, and safety policies.

The Captain will have their own shared quarters on the boat, separate from the living quarters of youth. Between each service learning program, the Captain can expect 14-days of flex-time where the boat will be used for donor-development and community benefit activities.

Responsibilities
  • Sailing Central America & the Caribbean
  • Build a strong sense of teamwork amongst youth and staff on the boat
  • Hold all youth and staff to the highest levels of seamanship
  • Lead short-term donor development and community benefit trips
  • Complete daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance schedule
  • Participate in service learning projects during service learning program
  • Help maintain fleet of SailFuture vessels in St. Petersburg, FL
Minimum Qualifications
  • USCG 6-pack Captain's License
  • First Aid / CPR (provided during SailFuture Staff Training Program)
  • Strong understanding of, and ability to repair, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • 5+ years sailing experience
  • An ability to relate to the life experiences of the youth SailFuture serves
  • A passion for mentoring and coaching
  • At least 2 years experience working with at-risk or troubled youth
  • Valid driver’s license
Compensation
  • $45,000 annual salary
  • $250 monthly health insurance contribution
